Agreed. The use of Moodle statistics could be a legal and ethical minefield. From the point of the specific paper to be presented at ICEP 2010, it must first clear an ethical panel at the institutes from which the data is drawn. The data collected is the standard data that Moodle records in relation to resource access. This data is generally available to the lecturer on the relevant course. The authors have taken great care to ensure that individuals cannot be identified from the work.

This paper examines the utility of analysing Moodle statistics with a view to understanding how students use Moodle and also to identify weaker students ealier in the academic year. Long-term, an output of the project will be a tool that consumes Moodle data, already available to the lecturer on a Moodle course, and present that data in a digested format to that lecturer. If there is a question to be answered, it is whether those standard Moodle logs should be kept at all.

It is true there is a wealth of data on student use of Moodle, but also ethical dilemmas in making use of it. There is increasing concern about the use of data for purposes for which it wasn't intended & data protection laws are involved. Were students informed in advance that they were being observed for the purposes of this research or were they debriefed later & consent given?
